Well, IBS and lactose intolerance are different things.
If you have gas/loose stools after eating dairy, it could either be due to lactose intolerance or your IBS. It depends on whether your symptoms are being caused by one or the other.. it’s possible your problems could be from one or both.
So if it’s lactose intolerance (you can still have it even if you have IBS), it may be helpful. But dairy products are discouraged entirely if you have IBS, even if you aren’t lactose intolerant.
IBS is an iffy diagnosis. It often means the Doc just isn’t sure what’s causing your problems, so figuring out the exact cause of your problems (which foods/combinations, what times, activities, etc.) will be helpful in the long run. If your problems are only with dairy products, for example, it’s likely you’re actually just lactose intolerant (a common misdiagnosis).
