Goji berry juice for liver failure?
My father has been in the hospital for almost two weeks because his liver has failed due to alcohol (alcoholic hepatitis). The doctors say there is not much they can do so we’ve been giving him alternative medicines like Goji berry juice and lemonade cleanse (lemon juice, maple syrup and Cayenne pepper). Does anyone know if these things could have an adverse effect on his health?
Thank you for your opinion Gary, the doctor told us he can’t give us his professional opinion on these things because he has no training on them, though he did say it’s okay to try them. So I guess we’re just reaching for the stars.

He should always ask his doctor before taking anything that could have an effect on his liver. The doctors usually allow you to take it if it won’t hurt you. I had cirrhosis and needed a transplant. They let me take Milk Thistle telling me it was OK because it wouldn’t hurt me, but they didn’t want me taking anything else in line of herbs, and other so called miracle cures that seem to be everywhere. The Milk Thistle never did anything good for me either even though I took it. All you are doing is wasting your money.
If his liver is failing from alcohol, the best thing he can do for himself is to stay away from all alcohol and see if there is any improvement from that. I’m hoping he has already done that. If his damage is severe enough, he will need a transplant. Transplant centers require 6 months of proven sobriety before they will be considered to get a transplant. After that, they will evaluate to determine if he could be a candidate. The problem is that many alcoholics either do not have 6 months left to live, or they cannot remain sober and give up the alcohol.
These things are not medicines, they are quackery, and will certainly have no positive effect in terms of his liver problem. I don’t think they will necessarily have an adverse effect, but your dad’s diet and treatments must be discussed with his doctor.
"Sam-e" and "polyenylphosphatidylcholine" also known as "PPC" (brand name "PhosChol") are the best supplements for your dad…
Sam-e should be taken on an empty stomach.
If you can’t get the PhosChol, Lecithin may help some but he’d need to take at least 6 of these a day.
Hello,
Use Silybum marianus (Milk Thistle) to protect the liver from damage by viruses and toxins, including alcohol and drugs. It is also a potent antioxidant, and laboratory studies indicate it may have useful anti-cancer properties. Taraxacum officinale, more commonly known as Dandelion, has a beneficial effect on the liver and digestive system.
It is considered a very effective general tonic and is known to improve bile flow and reduce inflammation associated with hepatitis and cirrhosis. In addition, Verbena officinalis treats inflammation of the gallbladder and is also used for jaundice. It is also well-known for its ability to relieve tension, stress and mild depression.

Hope it works
