IF they are able to do the surgery by Laproscopy then it takes only an hour or two. IF they have to make a large cut it takes longer AND the healing time is quite a bit longer.
IF they do Laproscopy you will have 4 or 5 tiny holes and you will only be in the hospital overnight at most. I strongly suggest when you go home, for the 1st week, you should sleep in a recliner chair rather than trying to get into bed. You will be given pain killers, but you should reduce the amount you take each day so that at the end of a week you are no longer taking any drugs. You will not be able to lift anything heavy for a few weeks.
IF they have to make a large cut your recovery will be at least 6 weeks instead of 1 or 2.
Over 1/2 million people in America have their gallbladders removed every year. Is it necessary? Will your digestion be perfect afterwards? That’s what everybody’s hoping for, to be pain free, gas free, bloat-free and to be able to eat whatever they like. You have a 60% chance of that happening. Out of every…

I had laparoscopic cholecystectomy about 2 years ago. Not sure how long I was out, but I’m told about a hour or so. Most people recover in a day or two. Due to other conditions I have, they kept me an extra day in the hospital. When I went home, it was EXTREMELY painful getting into bed — trying to turn from sitting to lying down. They gave me 2mg morphine pills that were amazing. They knocked out the pain fairly quickly and put me right to sleep. I only needed just a single morphine pill when I went home. The next few days I had an occasional Vicodin. Most people get by without morphine.
Gall bladder removal is the most commonly performed surgery in the US. It is safe and effective where called for.
