I have to have gall bladder removal surgery and I need some insight.?
If you have had your gall bladder removed, can you tell me what to expect after the surgery? How long did it take to feel like yourself again? Is the rumor about explosive diarrhea true?

My surgery went off without a hitch. The incisions are tiny because they use laparoscopic surgery, I had my surgery on a Monday night as an emergency, I was home the next day and by Thursday I was able to go back to school. There is more long term muscle bruising and healing that takes place over several weeks but no TERRIBLE pain at all. It was very manageable.
It is possible that while your body is adjusting to the new deal with your liver and bile (now that you have no gallbladder), you can get diarrhea from eating foods high in fat, because it is not processed as easily. But your body eventually adjusts to the missing organ and you go back to normal.
I had mine out three years ago. If you have the "bandaid" surgery, it is an easy in and out. I spent 2 nites in the hospital, one the night before surgery as I came into the emergency room with pain and one the night after surgery. I easily went home the day after surgery. I had little to no pain but felt slightly uncomfortable, mostly just walked slowly for about a week.
And, sorry to report, the diarrhea stories are mostly true. I think it varies from person to person, but plan to be near a bathroom within 10-20 mins after you have eaten for awhile.
Good luck, the surgery isn’t a big deal.
I had the surgery in 2000. Less than 24 hours after the surgery, I was walking around. The hospital released me that day. I wound up back in the hospital later that night as I was not well. Got sick to the point of vomiting and felt like I was going to pass out. Spent another night in the hospital hooked up to iv’s. After that I was released and then was ok. It took about 2 weeks til I was completely back to 100%. I was able to go back to work. The only thing that made it hard was that I had a nearly 3 year old and a 1 1/2 year old at the time. And that the hospital gave me a penicillin derivitive when I am allergic to penicillin.
It wasn’t a bad experience. I only had one stone. And I didn’t have explosive diarrhea.
I just had laparoscopic (sp) surgery to remove my gall bladder just five days ago and under the circumstances I am feeling quite well. The diarrhea is very true. I had an emergency surgery and within two hours after being released from recovery (probably about three or four hours post surgery), I was getting up and walking to the bathroom on my own. A nurse had to help with sitting up, but by that evening I was even doing that on my own and able to go on short walks. I was released from the hospital the afternoon after the surgery.
Don’t overdo it. Prepare to spend LOTS of time in bed. I think it helped me that before and after the surgery I laid constantly in an angle (about 135 degrees). This way I didn’t put too much of a strain on my stomach. Although I am feeling much stronger, I am still laying that way and have not required any pain meds in the past few days. You should also prepare to walk around every once in a while, just start off very slowly and work your way up.
Other than the loose stools, the only thing that really bothers me is that I have been feeling insatiably hungry and I have a different taste in my mouth.
Overall, the surgery wasn’t bad. I have literally had worse experience with a tooth filling. The doctor didn’t put me on any sort of diet, but I’ve cut back on my fat intake and have been boiling my chicken to be on the safe side.
Good luck!
