opt for soy or almond milk. avoid all milk products and give her probiotics daily.
Lactose free milk should be okay for trying to cut out dairy products. Cheese is a big problem for people who are sensitive to dairy products. However, yogurt usually is good. My mother had that problem and getting off cheese and eating yogurt helped her a lot. She also used lactose free milk and did very well with it.
My 11-year-old son is lactose intolerant and cannot tolerate any dairy without bloating, gas, and a great deal of discomfort. But most people on the planet are lactose intolerant beyond infancy, which makes sense when you think about it. For all mammals, milk is nature’s perfect food for growing babies. Even the world’s most famous pediatrician, Dr. Benjamin Spock concluded that there is no biological need for milk beyond the age of two. It is really sad that the dairy industry has us convinced that without cow’s milk (which by its very nature is designed for baby cows, not humans), we would all wither and die of malnutrition. But nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, the opposite is true. The saturated fat, cholesterol, excessive protein, and hormones (naturally occurring and artificial) found in cow’s milk are linked to many serious human diseases including breast and prostate cancers, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, autism, obesity, and yes, osteoporosis. Quite frankly, I was rather relieved when I discovered that my son was dairy intolerant. It was just the excuse I need to get my whole family away from the consumption of dairy products.
Fortunately, there are plenty of delicious alternatives to dairy these days. There are substitutes made from not only soy, but rice, oats, almonds, hemp, cashew, and coconut. Among our family’s favorites are Earth Balance Buttery Spread, Dr. Cow Tree Nut Cheeses, Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream, and So Delicious coconut milk beverages, yogurt, kefir, and creamer.
